The sexual reproduction takes place through sex cells or gametes, which are produced in gonads i.e. testes and ovaries. In this process the male gamete or sperm unites with female gamete or egg by the process of fertilization to form a zygote. The zygote by growth and differentiation develops into a new individual.

Formation Of Meiosis And Gametes:

The sex cells both male and female are formed by a process known as gametogenesis. This process involves meiosis in which the spermatogonium and oogonium mother cells divide twice. The result in the formation of four sperms from one sperm mother cell, but in the case of oogonium the four cells are produced in the process, out of which only one matures to form egg and other three get dissolved. In this process of gametogenesis the number of chromosomes is reduced to half to that present in the mother cell. Formation of the sperm by this process is known as spermatogenesis and that of egg or ovum is known as oogenesis.

In males, primary spermatogonia divide mitotically and repeatedly to produce several daughter cells called as secondary spermatogonia. Secondary spermatogonia are transformed into primary spermatocytes mitotically. Primary spermatocytes are changed into secondary spermatocytes and spermatids meiotically, which also increases the number of germ cells. Each spermatid is transformed into a sperm having half the number of chromosomes.

The sperms when mature are elongated structure. It consists of an anterior head, which carries the nucleus and a long tail. The tails helps the sperm in swimming to locate the egg which cannot move.

During oogenesis, the oogonia divide mitotically to give rise to successive generations of oogonia also called primary oogonia. Thus number of chromosomes remains diploid. Some of these primary oogonia enlarge in size and are called primary oocytes. These undergo a meiotic division to yield a large sized secondary oocyte and a small sized first polar body. The diploid number (2n) is reduced to haploid number (n). The secondary oocytes enter the second meiotic division which is actually mitotic and result in the formation of a small second polar body and a large definitive ovum or egg with haploid (n) number of chromosomes.
