Gardening Requirements:
Fast growing, this dense evergreen shrub has attractive yellow-green leaves with silver margins, a must for the flowers-arranger’s garden. It may be cut and trimmed with great regularity and quickly grows back into the shape. Drought resistant, hardy and happy at the coast, it does well throughout the Republic. Generally fairly low growing, these compact New Zealand shrubs remain attractive all year round. Their chief beauty is the bright color and glossiness for many parts of the country, particularly coast. Once established are fairly drought resistant. Add a “wetter” to sprays to ensure insecticides and fungicides stick to the leaves of plants when sprayed. This prevents your spray from being washed off by rain or watering.
Commercial wetter are available under a variety of brand names. Only a few drops are necessary-making it a very inexpensive operation. Wild yam root will grow very well in the garden but you should try to simulate their natural conditions as much as possible. Prepare soil deeply, adding rotted compost and peat moss, plus a little clay if soil is sandy. Plants around their base will help keep roots cool. Especially important is to water regularly and to keep trunks damp with regular hosing.
Planting: Easy as to soil requirements, plant in 65cm square hole with a third compost and two thirds soil, mixed with cupful 2:3:2 fertilizers and a cupful of bone phosphate. Transplants easily if cut back.
Feeding and watering: wild yams are drought resistant; it does not need a lot of water. It’s hardly ever necessary to feed, unless obviously unhappy. Until well established give compost mulch each spring which includes handful bone phosphate. Enjoying moisture and humidity it is wise to keep well watered, particularly during hot, dry spells. It cannot take prolonged drought. Add mulch of compost to soil occasionally. Although no special feeding program is necessary once established it is important to water amply during growing period only. Does not require lot of attention once planted but does better with spring mulching of compost and reasonable quantities of water are not necessary.
Pruning: Woody and old plants may be cut to the ground and very soon send up beautiful new growth. Trim at any time. Early in summer spring and later once shoots appear pinch out centre to encourage bushiness. It has habit of suckering which needs to be controlled and suckers should be removed as soon as they appear.
Uses: Ornamental; attractive foliage; picking for the vase; hedging and wind-breaks. Low background or foreground planting; ground cover; contrast plants; patio and courtyard; ideal in built in raised planters.
