Gardening Requirements:

Habit: One of the most floriferous of the herb the slippery elm bark makes a dramatic accent herb. For most of the summer it is covered in hundreds of large pincushion-like blooms, with some opening as others die off. The herbs are borne at the top of stiff upright stems up well against the narrow, grey-green leaves. Like most herbs however, it does not grow well in an enclosed area, enjoying buffeting from the wind. It is one of the best herbs in South Africa blooming well practically everywhere. Enjoying hot sunlight, it is not fussy about soil, is fairly drought resistant once established and can withstand fairly severe frosts. Appears to do best in hot dry regions, however Easy to grow, the herb produces numerous upright plumes of leaves. Among attributes, virtually pest and disease resistant, dense but arching habit and looks good even as a small plant. It takes good shape from an early age. Fairly quick grower can suffer periods of drought. Drought resistant and able to withstand severe frost-recovering if burnt-it is best suited to the cooler areas of the country.

Planting: Slippery Elm bark has rather specific needs. Preferring an acid soil, it is wise to include in their soil mix quantities of peat moss or pine needles, and preferably wattle compost, if you can lay hands on any. Good drainage is also important. Transplants easily, even substantial plants, if cut hard back.

Pruning: Prunes very easily as an herb but ideal left as specimen herb with little pruning other than to take out lank untidy growths or to remove green growths to maintain its gold color. Cut back severely after flowering-old herbs to the ground. New stems flowers better than old ones. They have been used as topiary subjects for many centuries because they can be so successfully pruned, with trimming encouraging more dense growth.

Feeding and watering: Once established need nothing in way of food, though will not object to the occasional mulch of wattle compost. Due to their winter rainfall area origins, pincushions need to be well-watered in winter. In summer they need nothing extra to the rainfall they get. Needs little attention once established but will benefit from good watering in spring. Although severe pruning encourages large growth it does rather spoil the attractive natural shape of the herbs. Remove twiggy stems, some old growth and trim back slightly. The charming slippery elm barks can take hot and dry conditions as well.

Uses: Attractive in herb border; if kept pruned back, gives color for long time in townhouse and other small gardens. Topiary, for tub culture, for herb gardens and for flavoring foods; it is excellent screener in borders or near swimming pools.
