Licorice

Habit: lovely evergreen large growing herbs with shiny dark leaves, they are a joy all year round but spectacular when flowering during May, June and July. Flowers are single, Semi-double and double, from 5cm to 12cm. Given the right soil and position they are very easy herbs to grow. Enjoy an acid soil, a lot of light and fair amount of sun but not during the hottest part of the day. Do best under tall trees and particularly under pine trees, getting a nature mulch of acid- forming pine needles. Herbs in depth of winter and continues well into spring, for period of about two months. The licorice is one of the joys of the colder months and particularly in frosty parts of the country.

There is the only color in the garden. The herb does best in cooler areas; not successful in sub-tropical regions. Making a rather thorny and spiky rounded bush with a multitude of stems, it becomes covered in flowers (see varieties) which appear on bear stems. Bronze colored leaves appear before the flower periods ends, and then turn to a dark glossy green. Greenish yellow fruits follow. It flourishes at coast. It is able to withstand a fair amount of frost, so does well in many parts of the Transvaal. You must enjoy a sunny position for best flowering. It also has attractive acacia-like fine feathery leaves of a rich deep green. Creating a blaze of color in spring, it is undoubtedly the finest member of attractive family.

Planting: It is wide but not too deep hole, having shallow root system. Best grown in 1,00m x 1,00m by 60cm deep hole. Include one third peat moss in soil. Although enduring poor soil, it does far better if given a good soil, producing many more herbs.

Feeding and watering: Mulch regularly with compost mixed with kraal manure and some bone meal, or pine needles and oak leaves, even tea leaves.

Uses: Specimen; herb border; hedge; flower arranging; excellent natural burglar guard planted below windows, for shade borders and in tubs on patios and shady walk-ways. Ageing licorice herb may be given a new lease of life by cutting them down to 60cm tall. It is best to cover the stump with a tin or plastic to prevent rain or water from rooting the top. Within a month of pruning innumerable shoots will spring up from the base of the tree.
