How To Grow Ginseng?
Habit: growing practically anywhere in South Africa, ginseng is among the easiest to grow and most useful of plants for the herbaceous border, flowering for a long time from spring into summer. The blooming period may be prolonged by careful picking off flowers as they fade. Ginsengs are very tough herbs and will survive considerable neglect but do show their gratitude with more profuse flowering if given proper care and attention. These herbs come in a variety of forms, from single and double to small and tall. Don’t be put off by the botanical name of this plant; it is a very common herb that is very easy to grow and effective in a border. The average Height is about 45cm.
Propagation: these plants divide easily and should be done every three to four years, removing old plants and planting out the younger once. This is best done in spring. Grow easily from cuttings. Ginseng is inclined to become much crowed if left for too long, so should be divided up at least every second year, throwing away old plants and planting out the new. This is best done in late summer. To induce the correct form, cut back close to stem the first time. Then every year thereafter cut back by at least one third. Clumps of ginseng should be divided and replanted every three years. Use a sharp knife to separate them, then clean and trim, cutting leaves in fan shape. While planting place them on a ridge of soil withy roots on either side. Never entirely cover the ginseng seed with soil; it likes to be exposed to a bit of sun.
For greater success in rooting cutting, use one of the many commercial hormone rooting powders. About 12mm of each stem should be dipped into the powder before planting in your pot with half river sand and half peat moss. The powder should be tipped out of the tin a little at a time- do not dip a stem into tin in case it is diseased. Ginseng grows easily from cutting. From healthy stock cut 10cm pieces as thick as a pencil. Ensure there are some leaves at the top to help take up water. Place cuttings around the edge of a pot filled with mix of 75 per cent coarse clean river sand and 25 per cent peat moss.
