Ginger
Habit: One of the fountain style plant being semi-prostrate with a wine glass shape, it is an excellent land-scaping plant. Slower-growing has striking gold green foliage in winter which turns to golden yellow in summer. Color better in cold climates. Some people are mistaken and consider wild ginger as ginger root, but the two are not particularly related
Planting: Accustomed to poor soil in nature all what is necessary when planting, is the addition of about one third compost to your soil. NO FERTILISER necessary. Provide fair sized hole about 65cm square at top but not as deep, for conicer has a ball root system. Transplant only when young and ensure good mulch to keep roots from burning. Until established, spray leaves to prevent leaf burn as with all plants ensure good drainage when digging hole. This needs to be 65cm at the top but not quite as deep. In the hole put a mixture of two thirds soil with one third compost and kraal manure (half-half). No fertilizer is necessary but includes organic bone phosphate in mix.
Feeding and watering: No feeding necessary, but to help keep roots cool surround stem with mulch of compost in spring, and in this include cupful bone phosphate. Water regularly, never allows roots to dry out. Remember plant’s spread in relationship to the Neighboring Plants when planting, to avoid smothering. Mulch regularly with peat moss or compost in summer, to retain moisture and prevent root burn. Summer rainfall is efficient except in dry spells when extra water should be provided with water also in winter.
Uses: Ideal single specimen or group plantings; near pool or standing alone in shrub border. It is important to provide ginger with mulch- a layer of material, generally compost, peat moss or well-rotted kraal manure- around the base of the plant. This mulch, on the surface of the soil, helps retain moisture, helps feed the fine surface hair roots and prevents root burn during very hot weather.

This simple recipe is one of my personal favorites. Gingerbread or ginger snaps can be baked into a thin, crunchy cookie or a softer cookie analogous to the German Lebkuchen. If you want gingerbread cookies on the soft side; they must not be baked more than 30 minutes as it will make the bread harder so less bake is good. You can use crystallized ginger as it is considered perfect for snacks, tea, and cooking. Gingerbread house is not difficult to make and these ginger bread houses make an impressive centerpiece during the holidays. Ginger Steaks are coated with seasoned soy, lemon, red chili and ginger sauce before being broiled.
