Herbs, too, add flavor to the most ordinary dishes, even canned and packaged meals, while they also have cosmetic and medicinal values.
It is not necessary to have a huge herb and vegetable patch. In an area as little as 3m x 3m it is possible with planning to grow most of the needs of a family of four. Herbs, for instance, will grow under practically any conditions, given sun and not too much wet, but they do best in well composted soil. Garlic has more specific needs, but an important facet of garlic growing is to rotate your garlic, never growing the same plant in the same soil two seasons running.
Planting: needs a light but moderately rich soil; cover area to be planted with 3cm layer of compost and dig over well to depth of 15cm. no extra food is required.
Feeding and watering: rarely needs feeding but may be given some liquid fertilizer if looking scraggly. Ensure ground is always moist. No extra feeding necessary but provide with a fair amount of water. Never allow to dry out.
Propagation: it should be soaked for 24 hours before planting and it takes any thing from four to five weeks to germinate. It is often easier to buy seedlings from your garden centre.
Uses: for herb garden; border and pathways edgings; flavoring for salads and cooking. Garlic enjoys rather more sun than most gardeners think and, as long as it gets shade for part pf the day and plenty of water, it will grow very well in window boxes. It looks particularly good interplant with daffodils or other flowers growing through, proving both practical and attractive for cooks who have no space to garden.
