Eucalyptus Oil

Habit: spectacularly beautiful with fluffy flowers, from November to winter, this tree grows best in temperate areas such as along the Garden Route, but will grow in protected areas inland. Unlike most eucalypts, which grow too large or have enormous root systems, it grows to about 9m and has deep root system. A slow grower, the Red Flowering Gum does not always turn out true to type. It may be any thing from white to cream, apricot, scarlet or crimson. Unfortunately no way of knowing color until it flowers. It provides a good shade but not so heavy that grass will not grow under it. In spring it becomes covered with green / white but rather inconspicuous flowers, followed by winged seeds.

Basically it has been grown from foliage, which turns yellow in autumn. Enjoys cold climate and is neither suitable for coastal gardens, where it will be scorched by hot winds, nor for small gardens. It also resists pests and diseases. It grows well in all but the coldest part of the country. In Free State and High-end should certainly be protected during first few winters. Bears unimpressive small yellow flowers, followed by rather ornamental black berries. Dig hole deeper than wider but at least 65cm square on top. Provide new plant with one third compost to two thirds soil, plus cupful super phosphate in bottom soil for flowers. Only very small plants transplant.

Feeding and watering: Once established needs very little attention – can even withstand spells of drought. Requires good supply of water particularly during winter months, but once established needs nothing much in way of feeding.

Pruning: Can take severe pruning if necessary. Even if cut to near ground level will recover quickly. Remove lower lateral branches of young trees to increase height of canopy for shade, but retain lateral branches if needed as screener. Prune also to keep shape.

Uses: Shade tree for cooler areas – large gardens. It is ornamental, good specimen and avenue tree. Splendid for large garden, but as nothing much will grow in its deep shade and because of its strong root system it is best used as specimen in lawn or for covering a parking area and it is also a good screener.
